Even the most beautiful backyard pool can attract some unwanted visitors. Water bugs are common in Australian pools, especially in summer, but the good news is they’re easy to manage with the right approach. Here’s how to identify them, remove them, and stop them from coming back.

Most pool bugs in Australia fall into two categories:

Water Boatmen: Small, oval-shaped insects (up to 3 cm) that feed on algae and plant matter. Harmless, but their presence can attract other pests.

Backswimmer Bugs: Similar in appearance but lighter in colour, and they swim upside down. They bite, and their sting can feel like a bee sting—definitely one to avoid!

How to deal with them:

  • Skim them out with a net or leaf rake.
  • Scrub your pool surfaces to remove algae - their main food source.
  • Vacuum up sediment at the bottom.
  • Follow with a pool shock treatment to clear out algae and sanitise your water.
  • Always shock at night and run your pump for at least 8 hours for best results.

Prevent future infestations.

The key to bug prevention is regular maintenance:

  • Test and balance chlorine and pH levels every few days, especially after hot weather or heavy use.
  • Clean filters and pumps to keep circulation healthy.
  • Use a preventative algaecide to stop algae growth before it starts.
  • Cover your pool when it’s not in use.
  • Try bug zappers or traps around your pool area, and consider switching to yellow-toned lights which naturally repel insects.

Does fibreglass help control pests?

Fibreglass pools have a smooth, non-porous surface that makes it harder for algae to grow - meaning fewer bugs are attracted in the first place. This reduces the need for harsh chemicals and constant scrubbing, saving you time and money.

Pool bugs are annoying but manageable. By keeping algae under control and maintaining good water balance, you’ll make your pool a less inviting home for insects. And if you’re considering a new pool, fibreglass offers a naturally lower-maintenance option.
